Front suspension upgrade

Choosing the right golf cart A-arm lift kit

Upgrading to a golf cart A-arm lift kit replaces factory rigid front axles or transverse leaf springs with independent upper and lower control arms. Often searched by cart owners as aarm lift kits or double A-arm systems, this geometry allows each front wheel to articulate on its own, improving trail stability and steering control under load.

3" to 4" moderate lift

Best for neighborhood cruising and paved resort paths. Accommodates 20-inch tires on Club Car and Yamaha, or up to 22-inch tires on E-Z-GO, while preserving a low step-in height.

20" – 22" tires · Low step-in

6" all-terrain lift

The standard choice for hunting, woodland trails and farmland. Clears aggressive 22-inch to 23-inch all-terrain tires mounted on 10-inch, 12-inch or 14-inch aftermarket wheels.

22" – 23" tires · Trail clearance

Drop spindle alternative

If you drive only on flat pavement and prefer a simpler bolt-on installation without replacing the entire front suspension assembly, compare spindle lift kits.

Geometry and handling

Why independent A-arms outperform solid axles

Factory golf cart front ends rely on a rigid steel beam or a single transverse leaf spring. Striking a rock or rut on one side transfers force straight across the axle to the opposite hub, causing sharp chassis roll and steering feedback.

An A-arm kit introduces an independent double-wishbone setup. Each wheel absorbs impacts locally through its own coilover shock, while unequal-length control arms keep the tire contact patch flat on the ground during cornering.

Wheel fitment requirement: Double A-arm kits require aftermarket wheels with negative offset (such as 3+4 or 2+5 backspacing) to keep tires clear of the control arms and tie rods.

Four critical checks before ordering your kit

  1. Identify your cart and year split

Club Car DS models changed steering in 1997, while E-Z-GO TXT carts relocated the steering box in 2001.5. Confirm your steering configuration before selecting a kit.

  2. Choose your target tire diameter

Match your desired lift height to tire size. Stock Club Car fender wells rub on tires larger than 18.5 inches, requiring a 6-inch lift for 23-inch tires.

  3. Verify wheel offset and diameter

Factory 8-inch steel wheels rub on aftermarket spindles and tie rod ends. Plan on 10-inch or larger aftermarket wheels with negative offset.

  4. Assess rear suspension requirements

A-arm kits include rear lift blocks, but carts carrying rear passengers or cargo beds need heavy-duty rear leaf springs to prevent tail sag under load.

Safety check: On electric carts, always flip the Tow/Run switch to Tow and disconnect the main battery pack before loosening steering or suspension bolts.

Post-install setup

Dialing in camber and toe alignment

Installing an A-arm lift requires a complete front-end alignment before driving. Incorrect alignment causes steering wander, high-speed instability and rapid tire wear.

Set wheel camber perpendicular to flat ground at a 90-degree angle by threading the spherical Heim joints on the control arms. Once camber is zeroed, set front toe-out between 1/4 inch and 3/8 inch across the tire centerlines.

Torque specification: Tighten all Heim joint jam nuts to 35 ft-lbs and apply medium-strength thread-locking compound once final alignment is verified.

Suspension service and maintenance protocol

Follow these inspection intervals to keep your A-arm suspension secure, quiet and properly aligned.
Task Specification Service interval
Front camber 90° perpendicular (0° vertical angle) At install, after first operating hour, every 50 hours
Front wheel toe 1/4" to 3/8" front toe-out At install, recheck after suspension settling and periodically
Heim joint hardware Torque jam nuts to 35 ft-lbs Apply blue threadlocker after alignment; inspect every 50 hours
Grease zerk fittings Marine-grade NLGI No. 2 grease Pack at installation, inspect after first hour and every 50 hours
Suspension settling Roll cart 15 to 20 feet in both directions Perform prior to taking any camber or toe alignment readings

Equip your cart for rougher ground

A quality double A-arm suspension gives your cart true independent articulation, a wider footprint and the ground clearance needed for demanding terrain. Match your kit height to your tire package, confirm your steering generation, and complete a precise camber and toe alignment after installation.
